Amateur Brooke Henderson carded a final round 72 to capture the season’s second CN Canadian Women’s Tour event at Club de golf Beloeil in Beloeil, Que., on Wednesday.
Despite bogeys on three of her final four holes, the 14-year-old member of Team Canada's Development Squad was able to hold off LPGA Tour member Lisa Ferrero of California by two strokes for the victory.
“It’s amazing. The nerves are still going right now,” said Henderson of the win, which earned her an exemption into the CN Canadian Women's Open this August in Vancouver.
“It’s so exciting and I’m really looking forward to it. Hopefully, I can have some good rounds down there and play well.”
According to the Canadian Golf Hall of Fame, Henderson will become the youngest ever player to compete in Canada's National Women's championship. Current teen sensation and LPGA Tour member Lexi Thompson held the previous mark, playing in the 2010 tournament when she was 15. Henderson does not turn 15 until September 10th.
The youngest player ever to compete in an LPGA event was Beverly Klass who played the 1967 Dallas Civitan Open as a 10 year old.
Past CN Canadian Women’s Tour winner Candace Schepperle (68) of Birmingham, Ala., and Team Canada National Squad member Jennifer Kirby (74) of Paris, Ont. finished tied for third at 1-over par.
Angela Drane of Grandview, P.E.I. rounded out the top-5, finishing at 2-over while LPGA Tour member, Team Canada graduate and past CN Canadian Women’s Tour event winner Stephanie Sherlock of Barrie, Ont. tied for sixth, six shots back.
The season’s final CN Canadian Women’s Tour event is scheduled for June 25-27 at Legends on the Niagara in Niagara Falls, Ont. The event also carries with it a champion’s exemption into the 2012 CN Canadian Women’s Open.
Two more exemptions will be handed out to the top two players not otherwise exempt on the Tour's season ending Order of Merit.
