Norman out of British Open

The two-time former champion hasn’t played since shoulder surgery last year

Greg Norman has pulled out of next week’s British Open due to poor form, the twice champion said on Friday.

Norman hasn't played a tournament since shoulder surgery in September.

“I’m disappointed that I will not be able to participate in this year’s Open Championship, but unfortunately, it is taking me longer than expected to regain my competitive form,” Norman said on the British Open website.

“I was especially looking forward to playing St Andrews, celebrating The Open’s 150th anniversary and playing The Open Champions’ Challenge.”

Norman, 53, lifted the Claret Jug at Turnberry in 1986 and Royal St Georges in 1993 before his tie for third at Royal Birkdale in 2008.

His withdrawal opens the door for compatriot Jason Day, who becomes the fifth alternate to get into the Open, which starts on Thursday.
